One of the essential aspects of photo editing is to focus on photo detail and sharpening so that you can enhance clarity and sharpness. What does that mean?

Well, first, attention to photo detail means that you are honing in on small nuances and elements of a photo that make it stand out. This process can help you capture even the tiniest of features, such as intricate textures and nuances that would otherwise be easily missed. 

Paying attention to detail can add depth and a realistic feel to your photograph.

Next, sharpening is the technique that improves the apparent sharpness of an image by increasing the contrast between fine details and edges. 

Resizing, image compression, or camera sensor limitations are a few factors that can cause a loss of sharpness in an image. Luckily, sharpening techniques can help compensate for these quality losses, bringing back the crispness and clarity of the image.

Through using the right amount of sharpening, you can improve image quality and better showcase essential details. Areas like landscape features, facial features in portraits, and textures in macro shots benefit from this technique, significantly enhancing the overall visual experience while also drawing viewers’ attention to specific elements within the image.

Here’s how:

To enhance the details in your photo, apply the appropriate sharpening settings in Lightroom. 

Adjust the Sharpening Slider: Under the Detail panel, the first slider is for sharpening. You can use the Amount slider to adjust the strength of sharpening. As you increase the slider, you’ll see the details in the image become more pronounced. It is recommended to use the values between 60-80, depending on the quality of the image you’re working with. Preferably, you should apply sharpening in small amounts as too much sharpening can create an unrealistic look and artifacts.

Adjust the Radius Slider: The next slider is for radius, which controls the size of the details it will sharpen. If you’re working on a high-resolution image, increase the radius value. This will allow you to sharpen the large details in the photograph. A good rule of thumb is to use a radius between 0.8 and 1.5.

Adjust the Detail Slider: The detail slider sharpens the smaller, finer details in the photograph. While it’s recommended to keep the value low, if you want to sharpen fine details like hair or grass in the image, you can increase the value.

As you make adjustments, pay close attention to the areas that are becoming over sharpened or creating halo effects (where a bright line or glow appears around areas of high contrast in an image that has been heavily edited). When you’re satisfied with the result, check the image at 100% to look closely at the fine details.
